Fractal Audio Cable Essentials: Humbuster™ Noise Reduction and AM4 Insert Summing

Fractal Audio Cable Essentials: Humbuster™ Noise Reduction and AM4 Insert Summing

Fractal Audio Cables Explained: Humbuster™ vs AM4 Summing Insert Cables

Modern Fractal rigs are capable of astonishing tone, clarity, and flexibility. But even the most advanced processor can be held back by improper cabling. Noise, ground loops, signal loss, and routing limitations almost always trace back to how devices are connected.

Two cable types in particular often cause confusion for players running Fractal Audio systems: the Fractal Humbuster™ cable and the Fractal AM4 summing TRS insert cable. While both are purpose-built solutions designed around Fractal hardware, they solve very different problems and are used in very different parts of a rig.

This article breaks down exactly what each cable does, why it exists, and how to use it correctly so your Fractal setup performs at its best.

What Is a Fractal Humbuster™ Cable?

The Fractal Humbuster™ cable is designed to fight one of the most common and frustrating problems in guitar rigs: ground loop hum caused by unbalanced connections.

Fractal Audio processors such as the Axe-Fx III, FM9, and FM3 include special Humbuster™ outputs. These outputs are engineered to work with a specific type of cable that uses smarter wiring to reduce noise before it ever reaches your amp or downstream device.

The Problem It Solves

Many guitar amplifiers and pedal inputs are unbalanced. When you connect a Fractal device to these inputs using a standard TS instrument cable, you can create a ground loop between devices. The result is unwanted hum, buzz, or low-frequency noise that gets worse as the gain increases.

Balanced connections can reduce this noise, but most guitar amps do not support balanced inputs. That is where Humbuster™ technology comes in.

How Humbuster™ Technology Works

A Fractal Humbuster™ cable uses a TRS plug on one end and a TS plug on the other. Internally, the wiring allows the Humbuster™ output to actively cancel noise caused by ground loop currents.

The TRS end connects to the Humbuster™ output on your Fractal device. The TS end connects to the unbalanced input of your amp, preamp, or other device. This configuration allows the Fractal output stage to suppress noise without altering the audio signal itself.

There is no processing, no filtering, and no tone shaping involved. It is purely an electrical solution built into the output design and the cable wiring.

Why This Matters for Tone

Ground noise is not just annoying. It can mask detail, reduce perceived clarity, and make high-gain tones feel harsh or unfocused. Chasing tone while ignoring noise is like tuning a guitar with a loose bridge.

The Humbuster™ cable lets your Fractal gear deliver a cleaner signal to unbalanced inputs, especially in complex rigs like four-cable method setups or hybrid pedalboard systems.

  • Key Features of a Fractal Humbuster™ Cable
  • TRS plug on one end for Humbuster™-compatible Fractal outputs
  • TS plug on the other end for unbalanced amp or device inputs
  • Designed specifically for Fractal Audio processors
  • Helps eliminate hum caused by ground loops
  • Preserves full tone and dynamics
  • Built with boutique-grade components and rugged construction
When You Should Use a Humbuster™ Cable

Use a Humbuster™ cable whenever you are connecting a Fractal device to an unbalanced input and experiencing hum or noise. This includes:

  • Running outputs to the front of an amp
  • Four-cable method setups
  • Feeding traditional guitar amps or preamps
  • Hybrid rigs with pedals and analog gear

If the output on your Fractal unit is labeled Humbuster™, this cable is the correct choice.

What Is the Fractal AM4 Summing TRS Patch Cable?

The Fractal AM4 is a different kind of tool. It is a compact analog device designed to integrate microphones, instruments, and external effects into a Fractal-based rig while maintaining pristine balanced outputs to front of house or monitors.

One of the most powerful features of the AM4 is its insert loop, which allows external post-effects to be placed directly into the signal path just before the balanced outputs.

This insert loop is where the AM4 summing TRS patch cable comes into play.

Understanding the AM4 Insert Path

The AM4 insert jacks provide a fixed, series insert point between the internal analog processing and the balanced main outputs. The insert path is entirely analog and always active when both Send and Return are connected.

This insert point sits at the end of the analog signal chain, just before the balanced outputs. It cannot be bypassed or repositioned, and it does not affect USB or S/PDIF outputs.

The purpose of the insert is simple. It allows you to add external post-effects such as compression, EQ, or ambience processing while preserving the low-noise performance of the balanced outputs.

Stereo vs Mono Inserts

The AM4 supports both stereo and mono insert configurations.

For stereo inserts, you use TRS-to-dual-TS Y cables for both Send and Return. This allows stereo external processors to be fully integrated. For mono inserts, the situation becomes more complex.

If you use a standard mono patch cable for a mono insert, only the left output of the AM4 will carry the signal. The right output will be silent regardless of the output mode setting.

This is not a flaw. It is simply how the insert circuit works.

The Need for a Summing TRS Insert Cable

To use a mono external device while maintaining audio at both the left and right balanced outputs, you need a special cable. This is the Fractal AM4 summing TRS patch cable.

AM4 TRS Summing Cable Diagram

How the AM4 Summing Cable Works

The AM4 summing cable uses a single TRS connector on the AM4 side and a single TS connector on the mono device side.

Internally, the cable ties the tip and ring of the TRS connector together and routes them to the tip of the mono TS plug. This allows the mono return signal to feed both the left and right channels of the AM4 insert return.

The result is a properly summed mono insert that maintains balanced stereo output from the AM4.

No adapters. No Y cables. No signal loss.

Buy AM4 TRS Summing Cable

Why This Matters

Without this cable, mono inserts break stereo output symmetry and can cause confusion during setup or live use. The summing TRS insert cable ensures that mono post-effects behave exactly as expected while keeping the AM4’s balanced outputs clean and intact.

This is especially important in live or studio environments where consistency, reliability, and noise performance matter.

  • Key Features of the AM4 Summing TRS Patch Cable
  • TRS connector designed specifically for the AM4 insert return
  • TS connector for mono external devices
  • Internally sums tip and ring to mono
  • Preserves audio on both left and right outputs
  • Maintains balanced output performance
  • Purpose-built for correct AM4 mono insert operation
Humbuster™ vs AM4 Summing Cable: Choosing the Right Tool

While both cables are associated with Fractal gear, they serve entirely different roles.

The Humbuster™ cable is about noise reduction when interfacing with unbalanced gear.

The AM4 summing TRS cable is about correct signal routing when inserting mono external devices.

One fights hum. The other preserves stereo output.

Using the wrong cable will not damage your gear, but it can lead to noise, missing channels, or confusing behavior that undermines an otherwise world-class rig.

Final Thoughts

Fractal Audio systems are built with professional-level engineering, but they expect the same level of care in the cables that connect them.

Purpose-built cables are not accessories. They are essential components of the signal chain.

Understanding the difference between a Humbuster™ cable and an AM4 summing TRS insert cable ensures that your rig stays quiet, clean, and predictable, whether you are on stage, in the studio, or dialing in tone at home.

When everything is wired correctly, the gear disappears, and the music comes through.

Here at Rattlesnake Cable Company, we field many calls and emails about the Rickenbacker® Rick-O-Sound feature. Usually, these calls are all related to the Rick-O-Sound (or Ric-O-Sound) functionality not behaving as expected. Over the years, I started to notice a trend in relation to these calls, and wanted to basically create a checklist of reasons why your Rick-O-Sound is not working correctly. Some are obvious, but I'm adding them since I do get calls for this. So here are seven reasons...
Custom Stage Cable Looms

Custom Stage Cable Looms

What exactly is a cable loom? What is a Cable Loom? First, we need to address the fact that cable looms are sometimes mentioned with different terminologies. A cable loom is when you have multiple signals wires/cables wrapped in a single weave or 'loom'. Sometimes cable looms are referred to as Cable Snakes, Pedalboard Snake, or Pedalboard Cable Snake. Typically, these are used for Pedalboard Cable Management, from board to amp, but can refer to many other applications, such as IEM, XLR,...

What Is Rick-O-Sound? And what do you need?

What is the Rickenbacker® Rick-o-Sound (Ricko sound)? On the Deluxe Rickenbacker® models, they introduced the Rick-O-Sound circuit in their instruments. The Rick-O-Sound separates the two pick-ups (bridge and neck) into separate, independent lines that require a TRS (aka Balanced or Stereo) cable. You can then use these individual lines and send them to specific amps, pedal setups, etc., via our TRS to Dual Mono Splitter. This split signal handling is managed via a separate output jack...

We’ve all been there: relying on 'quality' cables from big-box stores because they’re easy. But as my latest project grew, so did my cable management nightmare. Moving to a 4-Cable Method (4CM) meant four individual lines cluttering the floor and a constant headache trying to remember which lead went where. I reached out to two companies on a weekend. Hank called me personally within an hour. He didn't just take an order; he did the homework. Hank researched my specific gear, downloaded the manufacturer's wiring diagrams, and even steered me toward straight connectors when I wrongly thought I needed right-angles. He built me a custom 20-foot, 3-cable loom and a 'Snakehead' instrument cable that is absolutely rock-solid. The construction is elite, and the packaging is somehow more surgical than an iPhone’s. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for a callback from the other vendor. If you’re tired of skimping on your signal chain and want your time back, go with Rattlesnake. The leather-tagged, color-coded convenience alone is a game-changer.
