Pedal Line Friday :: John N.

John N.

Hi Pedalboard viewers!

My name is John Naas, and I currently play bass guitar for "Agents of Rock", a 4 piece classic rock cover band based in the Spokane WA / Coeur d'Alene ID area. While the majority of our set is classic rock, we throw in some alternate, pop, and some country. Here is my current Pedalboard layout, in signal path order:

Polytune3 tuner - my favorite tuner ever, easy to read even with my glasses off, and has some cool features, and the strobe mode is very handy when setting up one of my basses.

Empress Bass Compressor - a recent addition to the board, it's a very transparent compressor with a high pass filter, mix knob, and a switch for a little mid boost/cut with a touch of overdrive. One of the best on the market.

Boss OC-5 Octave - I don't use this very often, except for some Cheap Trick songs that we do, to get that upper octave that Tom Petersen has with his 8 and 12 string basses. Also comes in handy if I need to fill things out when the guitar is soloing.

Tech 21 YYZ - the first version of the Geddy Lee pedal, the array of overdrive tones I can get from this pedal seem endless. I use it for a little extra grind on certain songs, and sometimes will use it as an always on pedal depending on the bass.

Genzler re/Q - this is a 5 band EQ pedal with a separate switch for high pass and low pass filters. I may use this depending on the venue to tweak our some problems frequencies. I can activate the filter section separately from the EQ, and this pedal has saved my tone many times in some unruly rooms.

Tech 21 Bass Driver - this is just another tone option for me, though if there are problems with my amp (hope not!) I can run my signal through the XLR out to the board. I usually have it set like a SVT, which works great with my Precision bass.

All pedals are patched with Rattlesnake patch cables, plugged into the input of my Genzler Magellan 800. I used Fender Jazz and Precision basses, and depending on my needs I also use a Mike Lull Modern 5.

That's all, Folks!

John

Submit Your Pedal Line!

About a million years ago, I used to run a blog called EffectsBay. On that blog, the most popular feature I would run was Pedal Line Friday. This is where readers of the site would send pics of their pedalboard and a short (sometimes long) write-up of routing and thoughts about specific pedals and the reasoning why they liked it, etc. Readers. loved this. It was a great way to learn about new applications or techniques regarding pedals. It also brought a little inspiration and knowledge about pedals you were not familiar with. It also brought a great sense of community - people like sharing and absorbing cool things, right? It was a super popular feature, and I loved putting them together.

All you have to do is send a pic of your pedalboard (or pedal line - it doesn't have to be on a board) along with a short (or long) write-up of the board. We want a list of pedals (manufacturer/model), routing would be great, and, most importantly, why you use those particular pedals. Also, this is a great way to promote your band or musical project - include that information as well!

You can send the pic and the write-up to pedalline@rattlesnakecables.com.

Best cable company you’ll ever find; and I don’t even have any cables of their yet! I was so impressed with the quality and customer service that came with my TRS to TS TS splitter that I’m waiting for my current cables to die so I can get some from Rattlesnake! When you compare the quality I... Read

Since 1966, I've owned enough guitar and musical cables to go around the world numerous times. The best without a doubt are the snake head and flex patch cables I own made by Rattlesnake! Best cable company you’ll ever find; and I don’t even have any cables of their yet! I was so impressed with the quality and customer service that came with my TRS to TS TS splitter that I’m waiting for my current cables to die so I can get some from Rattlesnake! When you compare the quality I don’t think it’ll take very long… These guys are a 5 star company for a reason and I’m a customer for life!

I've been a professional musician since the age of 19 (66 now). I've used every cable you can name. Mogami, D'Addario, Asterope, Armour Gold, ProCo, George L's, Lava and probably some I forgot. Ironically after seeing and hearing a great deal of buzz about Rattlesnake Cables I was in a music store in Boise, Idaho about 2 years ago and on a rack were some Rattlesnake Cables. I thought what the heck I would give it a try. When I got home I compared it to my Armour Gold, D'Addario American Stage and my Lava cable. No contest. The Rattlesnake cable was more balanced and had better cleaner more articulate mids, highs, and low frequency than all of the cables I was using. I also like the fact that the outside material is durable but not stiff. I now have at least 6 guitar cables in a variety of colors (I dig the Black Widow and Purple the most) and probably 18 patch cables of different lengths. The patch cables are now on my full size pedalboard, my alternate pedalboard, and my acoustic pedalboard. I'm done chasing the best sound for my guitar rigs I know I found it. THOUGHTS ABOUT THE SERVICE FROM Rattlesnake Cables: Hank and his team are terrific. They know it's a competitive world out there and there are so many choices in purchasing guitar cables and patch cables. Their Customer Service is 2nd to none. Always on time and most of the time exceed my expectations. I'm waiting for a curly cable throwback to the 60's, those were some of the first cables I ever used as a kid.

Construction is the best I've seen and used! Sound is also better!!! Compare them with what you have and you'll be a believer! Their service is the quickest and best, also!!!!! Thanks, always, to Hank and the crew!!!!!
