Pedal Line Friday :: Jeff G.

Jeff G.

I'm part of a two-guitar cover band that mainly focuses on 90s and 2000s rock. We both play rhythm although I play a little more lead because the other guitarist is the singer. My main guitar is a Knaggs Kenai-J with 2 P90s. I'm playing through an old Traynor YBA-1 into a 4x10 closed back cab. I was playing through a 1x12 but switched to a 4x10 because it is less boxy and fills out the sound without having to get louder.

My approach to the board is pretty straightforward. I don't use a bunch of drives because I use my volume and tone knobs a lot. I find that works well enough for me and lets me focus on playing music instead of fiddling with different drive pedals.

Guitar à Polytune à Quartermaster 6 à Quartermaster 2 à Amp: I'm a big fan of the GigRig Quartermaster switchers. They're rock solid, have a perfect feature set for my needs, and are low-profile.

Loop 1: Boss PS5 – Our band covers "Lonely Boy" by the Black Keys and I need the PS5 for the opening riff. For all other songs, I'll switch it to be an octave down pedal.

Loop 2: 1981 DRV – I really like this pedal because of how well it cuts but I'll probably replace it with a fuzz at some point. Or maybe a flanger. Who knows.

Loop 3: ZVex Box of Rock – This is the main drive pedal in this rig. Great rock sound with the P90s and it has a little boost if I need it. Cleans up beautifully, too. I actually bought this one from Matthew Vasquez from Delta Spirit (a band I love) so that's extra cool.

Loop 4: JHS Prestige – My solo boost pedal. All I really need is one knob and I save some space with it being a mini pedal.

Loop 5: Providence Anadime Chorus (underneath) – I love analog chorus and the Anadime is one chorus in a three-way tie for my favorite. The other two are the Analogman and the Mythos Fates. (The Analogman is already on another board and the Fates is too big to fit underneath.)

Loop 6: JHS Panther Cub – Analog delay with tap and EQ in a small form factor. What's not to love?!

Loop 7: SGFX EM-III – This is my first board with 2 delays. It's nice to have one set short (this one) and the other set longer (JHS). But the real fun is stacking them.

Loop 8: Strymon Flint – I'm picky about my reverbs and this is one of the few that sounds good to me. I've got a little plate mixed in nearly all the time. I don't use the tremolo very often but when I do, it's a fast choppy trem that I'm feeding delays into.

Power: Strymon Zuma and Ojai.

Submit Your Pedal Line!

About a million years ago, I used to run a blog called EffectsBay. On that blog, the most popular feature I would run was Pedal Line Friday. This is where readers of the site would send pics of their pedalboard and a short (sometimes long) write-up of routing and thoughts about specific pedals and the reasoning why they liked it, etc. Readers. loved this. It was a great way to learn about new applications or techniques regarding pedals. It also brought a little inspiration and knowledge about pedals you were not familiar with. It also brought a great sense of community - people like sharing and absorbing cool things, right? It was a super popular feature, and I loved putting them together.

All you have to do is send a pic of your pedalboard (or pedal line - it doesn't have to be on a board) along with a short (or long) write-up of the board. We want a list of pedals (manufacturer/model), routing would be great, and, most importantly, why you use those particular pedals. Also, this is a great way to promote your band or musical project - include that information as well!

You can send the pic and the write-up to pedalline@rattlesnakecables.com.
