Artist Spotlight :: Cole Decker

Bio

Cole Decker

Cole Decker is a Mississippi singer-songwriter living in Montan with a unique blend of writing and singing styles. His fusion of traditional country and southern rock has drawn comparisons to artists like Chris Stapleton, Whiskey Meyers, and 49 Winchester.

Starting with the piano at a young age, Cole later picked up the guitar in college. He has played live shows for around six years and has been an opening act for performers like Frank Foster, Parker McCollum, and Red Shahan. Now based in Bozeman, Montana, he performs both as a solo act and with his band around the area.

Known for his honest and gritty writing style, Cole's new album, "Starting Fires On A Dare," features all original tracks like "Fifty-fifty" and "Nothing But A Plan." He considers this album a profoundly personal collection of songs ranging from heartbreaks and homelessness to dating apps and remembering his childhood.

What/Who inspired you to pick up your instrument?

I remember growing up and listening to old country with my grandfather. Waylon Jennings, George Jones, and many of the 90's Country singers played a massive role in my musical taste. When I started getting interested in playing myself, artists like Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown, and Billy Currington filled my setlist. Songwriters like Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Brent Cobb, and Sturgill Simpson are all influences, both musically and lyrically, and helped to shape and develop me as an artist. I remember hearing "Tennessee Whiskey" for the first time on the radio, and it significantly impacted my decision to start playing and singing music in a live setting and writing songs of my own.

What piece of musical advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time to the beginning of your musical journey?

Play every chance you get because there is no other way to practice playing and singing in front of people without playing and singing in front of people. The more shows I've played, the more comfortable I've gotten with myself and my abilities. Lastly, spend money on lessons before gear. You can always get better.

What keeps you excited about playing?

I love playing and singing to people. I love sharing my songs and seeing how people relate or don't relate to the message. I get excited to travel and play for different crowds and atmospheres and getting to spread joy through music to people from all different walks of life. Nothing beats it!

Desert Island 3 pedal pedalboard (not including tuner)

I like a good compressor, distortion, and delay. As of lately, I use the Line 6 HX Stomp which is perfect for being on the road and lugging around a huge pedal board. When you find yourself in a musical rut, what techniques do you do to break out of it?

I try to listen to a genre, band, or artist I'm not familiar with and soak in the music. For writing, I will find an album to break down. I gather all the details from each song and figure out what makes it great. It's a really fun exercise, and it can be handy when writing your own songs.

Who is your favorite artist/band today? And who was your favorite artist/band ten years ago?

My favorite artist today is Sturgill Simpson. He's the definition of a true artist because he's creating what he wants to make and not what people want him to, yet still selling out shows everywhere. Ten years ago, my favorite artist was Chris Stapleton. He's still in my top 5 because he consistently makes good music and has the best voice in Country.

When you find yourself in a music store - what is your go-to riff when test drive gear?

I have been playing a lot of fingerstyle guitar lately, so it's usually an old Doc Watson or Chet Atkins-style tune. If it's electric, I usually go for some blues riffs.

What is your most prized/cherished piece of gear? And why?

My Telecaster-style custom Matt Dickie guitar. It's so much fun to play, and it looks awesome. The guy who made it and his partner, Liz Cauthen, are incredibly talented guitar makers and people, and I love going to their shop to hang out and talk about guitars or whatever they're working on at the moment.

What is the next big musical purchase you're hoping to save for?

Either a new guitar or a custom set of in-ear monitors. It's not quite musical, but a van or bus with a kitchen is something I've been considering.

Gear Breakdown

Cole Decker Gear

We use Bose mains and run a Soundcraft Ui 24 mixer. I have a Shure wireless system for my guitars, and I ordered some custom Rattlesnake cables to set it up. I also use a Rattlesnake for my Telefunken M80 mic. I have an LR Baggs DI for my acoustic, the Helix pedal, and a volume/tuner pedal for my electric. I either play my J 45 or my Martin GPC-X1E as my acoustic and my Tele-style Matt Dickie as my electric.
