Artist Spotlight :: James "Plunck" Satterfield

Bio

James

My name is James "Plunck" Satterfield; I'm a 41-year-old bassist from Bowling Green, Kentucky, that has been playing bass since I was 14 years old. I come from a very musical family; I am a self-taught left-handed bass player that plays gospel music. I've traveled the country playing bass with The Clarksville Soul Stirs, The Dixies Travelers, The Spiritual Echoes, The Mighty Sensations, National Recording Artist Da Chozen Brothaz, and I'm currently traveling with Levise Rice and The Levites from Bowling Green, Ky.

What/Who inspired you to pick up your instrument?

When I was 5-6 years old, my dad would take us to his band rehearsals. Watching him play the bass and guitar inspired me to pick up the bass and learn.

What piece of musical advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time to the beginning of your musical journey?

Never settle for one genre of music; learn as much as you can; music is a cure-all!

What keeps you excited about playing?

My drive for playing is simply the love for music and being able to create music my family can listen to when I'm dead and gone.

Desert Island 3 pedal pedalboard (not including tuner)

I'm a Bass player that doesn't use pedals. My mind, fingers, and feel for the music will be the three tools that I need if on an Island.

When you find yourself in a musical rut, what techniques do you do to break out of it?

I will get in the car and drive. My wife and I love finding new backroads while listening to music, and nine times out of ten, I will end up having so many musical ideas come to me. Nothing like a good ole country road trip.

Who is your favorite artist/band today? And who was your favorite artist/band ten years ago?

My two favorite bands will forever be Earth Wind and Fire and The Ohio Players!

When you find yourself in a music store - what is your go-to riff when test drive gear?

Anything from the 70s, I just love funk music!!

What is your most prized/cherished piece of gear? And why?

My most cherished piece of gear is my Lowend 5-string P/J bass. This was one of many dream basses I was blessed to buy. Another reason I cherish this bass is that it's handcrafted by one of my best friends and mentors, the Owner of the Lowend bass guitar company Brian Barrett.

What is the next big musical purchase you're hoping to save for?

My own home studio is my dream purchase.

Gear Breakdown

James

I play a customized Warwick Rockbass and a LowEnd Bass; my personal setup is a 1x15 Gallien Krueger combo stacked with a 2x10 Gallien Krueger bass amp. I also use CFG zero gravity bass guitar Straps and The Rattlesnake Instrument cables. The gear I use is based on personal preference; to me, it's just the best of the best, in my opinion.

I've played guitar for over 20 years, and I've never given my cables much thought. However, I recently started seeing ads for Rattlesnake Cable Company, and I like their look and the fact that they are American made, so I decided to give them a shot. And man am I glad I did! First, the shipping was... Read

I've been playing guitar since 1972. During all the years I've tried every string on the market. Over the years I've used some really good sounding strings but once I tried Stringjoys I was hooked. Not sure how many sets of SJ's I've put on my Telecasters and also my Taylor acoustic but they are for... Read

However, I recently started seeing ads for Rattlesnake Cable Company, and I like their look and the fact that they are American made, so I decided to give them a shot. And man am I glad I did! First, the shipping was fast, and the packaging was pretty cool as each cable comes in it's own cloth sack. Second, the quality, look, and sturdiness of the cables were were leaps and bounds above what I was use to. Finally, and most importantly, when I A/B-ed them against my normal cables I was blown away by the improved tone. It was like somebody took a blanket off of my amp! I definitely recommend these cables to any guitarist who is serious about quality and tone.

I've been playing guitar since 1972. During all the years I've tried every string on the market. Over the years I've used some really good sounding strings but once I tried Stringjoys I was hooked. Not sure how many sets of SJ's I've put on my Telecasters and also my Taylor acoustic but they are for real. I've found SJ's to be long lasting, smooth as ice, and subtle but really clean. Love them and that's all I buy now. I'm fortunate to have tried them. Time to order more I think. If you play guitar you should try them. SJ's my string. RM
