Artist Spotlight :: Steve Wick

Bio

Steve Wick

Hello, I have been playing guitar for 30 + years and have played in several high-profile cover bands in the Cincinnati area. I currently play for Desalitt, and we have released two albums of original music. Desalitt has opened for national acts in Ohio and surrounding states.

What/Who inspired you to pick up your instrument?

I have been a fan of all kinds of music, especially Rock\Hard Rock. Obviously, Eddie Van Halen played a large role in my wanting to play guitar, but also many others, Randy Rhoads, My favorite bands: Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Dio, Alter Bridge --- the list goes on.

What piece of musical advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time to the beginning of your musical journey?

I would tell myself to get more into scales and modes and to develop my ear.

What keeps you excited about playing?

I get Excited about playing when I am writing new material and playing it live; when Desalitt is hitting all cylinders, it is quite magical.
I need to practice every day or every other day; mostly, it is just sitting in front of the TV and going over chords and scales.

Desert Island 3 pedal pedalboard (not including tuner)

Delay pedal---I just love a splash of delay on my sound
Wah Wah pedal---A Wah pedal can add that little extra musical expression.
Noise gate----when you are not playing, a noise gate can be calming....:)

When you find yourself in a musical rut, what techniques do you do to break out of it?

To break out of a musical rut, I will try and study from diff. Books, I have a lot of scale books, chord books, and Arpeggio books. I even have Classical guitar books that I use when I play the classical guitar.

Who is your favorite artist/band today? And who was your favorite artist/band ten years ago?

My Favorite band will always be VH; new bands I am listing to now are Alter Bridge, Mammoth WVH, Five finger death punch, Chevelle, Volbeat

When you find yourself in a music store - what is your go-to riff when test drive gear?

VH--Feel your love tonight
Extreme--Whole Hearted

What is your most prized/cherished piece of gear? And why?

Cherished piece of gear would be my 2 Wolfgang guitars. They just sound and play great. I have had them for several years.

What is the next big musical purchase you're hoping to save for?

Musical purchase I am saving for is studio time, it can get expensive, and you want the best quality you can get for your songs\band.

Amp-EVH 5150iii 50 watt 2x12 combo 6L6
4x12 5150 cabinet
Boss DD-8 digital delay pedal
EVH Wolfgang Peavey USA
EVH Wolfgang Fender USA
I run My DD-8 through the Effects loop using 2' Rattlesnake jumper patch cables--these cables are the perfect length, and the durability is great.
I am using the Rattlesnake speaker cable to my 4x12---this cable is solid and sounds great.
The Rattlesnake Snake Head cable is perfect for my guitar being plugged straight into my amp.
Over the years, I have gotten away from a complex setup; it's just easier to plug straight into my amp using the gain and adding a little Delay through the effects loop. Easy Peasy and fast set up and tear down.
I do have 2 Rattlesnake standard cables and 2 Rattlesnake patch cables for my home studio---Again, I have not had any trouble with these, and they sound great!!

I have tried many brands of 'boutique' cables for my instruments (guitar and bass) which had some gimmicks and promises of great tone. I saw an ad for Rattlesnake and decided to visit the website. Rattlesnake cables are by far the best cable I have ever tried at any price. The signal is clear and I can detect no difference in tone regardless of length. The plugs seem indestructible, and even the right angle ends work with a recessed Tele jack. I will not that they are stiff, due to the outer... Read

I have tried many brands of 'boutique' cables for my instruments (guitar and bass) which had some gimmicks and promises of great tone. I saw an ad for Rattlesnake and decided to visit the website. After reading about the research carried out to create the cables, I decided to try them out. I was immediately impressed by the feel. I plugged in and took it for a spin, wow, such a transparent tone. Since I am the sound tech for our band, I am responsible for quality sound reproduction and these cables provide that for me. I have since bought several cables of various colors for all my instruments. Love the quality and tone!

Rattlesnake cables are by far the best cable I have ever tried at any price. The signal is clear and I can detect no difference in tone regardless of length. The plugs seem indestructible, and even the right angle ends work with a recessed Tele jack. I will not that they are stiff, due to the outer covering, but I prefer that to worrying about pinching or cutting a cable. And with the optional "snakehead" version, where the covering ends about a foot before one plug, you need not worry about the covering harming the finish on your guitar. And dealing wiht them trough their web site is a very positive experience. They also offer a nice variety of colors. I currently have 4 of their cables -- Three 15 footers and a 10 footer -- but once I upgrade my rig with another a/b switch I'll be ordering more. Just a great small company with an excellent product line.
