I'm not a fan of TRS Y-Cables. They tend to fail, and you are stuck with the length you get. We are often asked about Y-Cables, and I recommend a TRS to Dual Mono Splitter!

You have maximum durability at the Y connection with a TRS to Dual Mono Splitter. It will hold up, and a Y will slowly get stressed. Additionally, you have the flexibility of using a variety of cable lengths. You can use long instrument cables, TRS cables, or patch cables for the TS or TRS connection. You're not stuck with the set length with this splitter, and since application requirements often change depending on the situation, it's nice to have options.

If you're using a Rickenbacker deluxe instrument with the Rick-O-Sound output jack, this is a great solution (in conjunction with a TRS cable). Learn more about the Rick-O-Sound here. Or if your instrument uses a TRS OBEL (On-Board Effects Loop) similar to what Jerry Garcia was known to use, this is also an excellent tool. The TRS to Dual Mono Splitter is great for guitars with dual outputs (magnet and piezo) that use a stereo output jack. Additionally, the splitter could be used with the Little Thunder guitar pickup systems!

Q: Why don't you sell Y cables?

Answer

Y cables, by design, cannot handle heavy strain, and the probability of failure is high. That's the number one complaint. The second issue is that you're stuck with whatever length the Y cable is set. As you requirements change, you may need shorter cables from the junction, or a longer cable for the primary TRS or Mono cable. With a TRS to Dual Mono Splitter or Mono to Dual Mono Splitter, you have a solid connection for the junction. You have the flexibility to swap out cables down the road.

Q: What cables would I need to connect to the TRS to Dual Mono Splitter?

Answer

You will need a single TRS cable and a pair of Mono cables - either patch cables or instrument cables (depending on the lengths).

I was honestly a skeptic, and figured since I only use 10' cables for recording, cable quality would make little difference. I always used cheap cables until I got tired of them failing on me and bought a 10' Rattlesnake cable and a couple of jumper patch cables for my effects loop. I was surprised to find that apparently my instrument cables had apparently been a significant noise source. The Rattlesnake cable was completely silent even with guitars I just thought had noisier pickups. In addition, the jumper cable I was using on my board apparently was draining quite a lot of high-end off, which I learned after swapping in one of the Rattlesnake jumpers. I ended up with a second order to replace all the patch and jumper cables in my setup, and a spare 10' cable. My new setup clearly retains more top end and is more quiet than I thought was possible. I didn't play a lot of high gain before and just accepted the noise when I did, but even high gain is no problem now. I'm sold!
