Our XLR cable uses our dual conductor cable milled in the United States. All XLRs use Neutrik Pro-Grade Nickel or Black Shells and are available with weave or no-weave if preferred. Rattlesnake Cable Company XLR cables are great for studio application and live stages. Weaving allows for a great opportunity to color-code cables and adds additional protection. What is an XLR cable?

XLR stands for "External Line Return" and is typically used for connecting microphones to an interface, mixers, or other types of recording equipment. Originally, XLR was used for Cannon X series cameras in the 1950s and stood for (X=Cannon X), (L=Latching), (R=Rubber/Neoprene insulation). XLR is also known as a "balanced cable" as well and can be used for a variety of methods of sending a clean, noise-canceling signal to powered monitors. XLR plugs are also found in older speaker cabinets connecting to amplifiers.

How to connect XLR cables?

XLR cables typically have male and female ends. Depending on the equipment, this may vary. Microphones require a female XLR plug, and the interface accepts the male XLR plug. When you purchase an XLR cable from this page, we will connect a single male and a female for the XLR plugs.

How long can an XLR cable be?

The maximum length before noise is introduced is 200 feet. We offer cable lengths of up to 30 feet with a weave. If you need a longer run, we can provide longer lengths without the weave. However, the longest cable we have with a weave is 30 feet.

Home Theater and A/V Applications

Many users in the Home Theater world use XLR cables as well. If you're connecting AV processors, Power Amplifiers, and Subwoofers, you may benefit from high-quality XLR cables. Please note that XLR cables should only be used to send balanced signals. If you're connecting power amplifiers to passive speakers - a speaker cable with a higher gauge wire will need to be used.

Q: Where are your cables made, and what cable do you use?

Our primary instrument, speaker, XLR, TRS, and Flex patch cables are built using Rattlesnake-brand bulk cable that is custom manufactured for us in the United States. We developed the specifications for each cable based on the flexibility, durability, handling, and electrical performance we wanted. It is not off-the-shelf Belden, Mogami, Canare, or another manufacturer’s finished cable covered with an outer weave.

After the bulk cable is manufactured to our specifications, every finished cable is cut, sleeved, soldered, tested, and packaged by our team in Missoula, Montana.

Some specialized products use third-party bulk cable when it is the best fit for that application. When they do, we identify the cable manufacturer and model in the product’s Specifications tab.

Complete construction and electrical details, including conductor material, wire gauge, capacitance, shielding, and cable diameter, are provided in the Specifications section of each applicable product page.

Q: Is there a quality difference between Nickel and Black XLR shells?

Answer

No. The contacts are the same for either style of Neutrik plugs. This is strictly a cosmetic preference. There is a higher purchase cost for us on the black.

Q: I would like to purchase an XLR that is longer than 30 feet. Can you do that?

Answer

Absolutely, just fill out a custom build request. It's important to note that the longest length with weave is 30', but we can make longer XLR cables without weave (bare) at any length desired.

Q: What is the weaving made of?

Answer

The weave is a poly-weave, meaning it's a plastic polymer-based weave. We use a variety of brands, but primarily TechFlex. It's designed to be heat and abrasion resistant. It is not a cloth/fabric weave, which tends to fray and stain easily.

I bought a coiled cable from him because, as a kid, that was the only kind I could afford. I bought 2 during a sale for nostalgic reasons. When I received them, I couldn't believe how heavy the box was. Those things are so well made and indestructible! You can walk on them, stretch it to no end and they bounce back in perfect shape every time. Quality is their highest priority. Then they go and package each one in a really neat, reusable burlap bag, the kind they wrangle snakes in! The best part is, their prices are better than most cablemakers out there. I bought a Mogami Platinum silent cable and it was almost 3 times what Rattlesnake charges and it isnt any better! I have purchased XLR to XLR cables, several instrument cables including the 2 coiled ones, a TRS to dual TS splitter box and a pick tin with my initials on it. All great and in use all the time. I use the instrument cables from my pedalboard to my amps. The splitter came in handy when I added a pedal that had a TRS input and I needed to connect it from a stereo pedal. And my pick tin sits proudly on top center of my board!

If you are looking for a new high quality guitar cable, or two, It'll be hard to beat the Quality of Rattlesnake Cables in Missoula. The service I've received has been incredible. Timely Shipping, and some of the finest materials, wire gauge, and assembly you could ask for. I picked up a couple of these cables and put them into my rig. I think these are the kind of quality I had hoped for. I purchased a 10' and a 15' Snake Weave Overwrap, and straight and right angle ends in Nickel. Did I say these are nice?
