What does TRS stand for?

TRS is an acronym that stands for Tip, Ring, and Sleeve - which reference the conductors of the plug. With each TRS cable, a 20AWG conductor would be connecting to the tip contact of the plug, a conductor on the ring contact of the plug, and the internal braided copper shield is bound to the plug's shield.

What is a TRS Cable?

A TRS instrument cable is a simple cable containing two internal conductors and a shield. Standard instrument cables use a single conductor and shield. The purpose of this type of cable is to pass a pair of signals instead of a single signal.

For example a TRS cable could be used as a stereo cable passing left and right signals in a single cable – like an auxiliary cable or headphone extension cable. A TRS cable for guitar could be used to pass multiple pickup sources (piezo and magnetic pickup) down a single cable. A TRS audio cable could also be used as an XLR or balanced cable used in many recording interfaces.

Q: Where is your cable manufactured?

Answer

We have a variety of wire mills that we work with. All of the wire mills we work with our in the United States. We take extreme pride that our cable is milled in the United States and hand assembled here in Missoula, Montana.

Q: Is a TRS a balanced cable?

Answer

It depends on the signal being passed down the TRS. A balanced signal is a pair of the exact same signal but with one signal inverted (180 degrees out of phase) relative to the other. Where a stereo signal is not equal - one represents the right side of the stereo field, and the other line is the left.

Q: Is a TRS a stereo cable?

Answer

It depends on the signal being passed down the TRS. If it's a stereo signal (left and right like in headphones), then it's basically an unbalanced stereo going down the wires. It would not be a balanced cable in this case but a stereo cable.

Q: Should I use a TRS or Standard Instrument cable?

Answer

Typically, for an instrument cable, you should be using a mono / unbalanced instrument cable, but some instruments have additional lines for different pickups where both pickups are separated but going down a single cable. Some Rickenbacker instruments, acoustic guitars, etc, use this - and in that case, you should use a TRS cable. 99% of the time, you should be using a Standard Instrument cable unless otherwise noted.

Q: What is the weaving made of?

Answer

The weave is a poly-weave, meaning it's a plastic polymer-based weave. We use a variety of brands, but primarily TechFlex. It's designed to be heat and abrasion resistant. It is not a cloth/fabric weave, which tends to fray and stain easily.

I was introduced to Rattlesnake Cables at South Shore Guitar Boutique on Long Island over the summer of 2023. The owners assured me that Rattlesnakes are the finest cables on the market, and that customers had been utilizing them to sample guitars and amps since they'd opened without having to replace a single cable. I purchased two that would compliment a new-build Jazzmaster and original Bartel Tone King Imperial (15' Copper and 20' Retro) and was instantly hooked. The look, feel, and most importantly SOUND that the cables provide is second-to-none: Clear while not antiseptic; full while not flowery; present but not pouty. Now armed with the gigging rig, I ordered a separate set for home practice directly from Rattlesnake. Hank answered all of my queries immediately and sent an amazing, personalized "Thank you" video. When the cables arrived, I was knocked back by Amy's immaculate packaging, which included very cool, sturdy pouches for each of the three cables I'd ordered (an additional Retro, an Oxblood for my current Jazzmaster, and a short Dirty Tweed for my vintage tweed Blues Junior - an amazing find via my longtime pal Matt Brewster at 30th St. Guitars in NYC). The undeniable quality and obvious pride Hank and Co. have for their products has earned in me a lifelong customer. I needed another cable like I needed a hole in the head. I had been using the same 4 channel snake cables for my keyboards for years. I started looking for a snake cable for my keyboards that was more substantial. I contacted a couple of high-end cable companies and Hank responded quickly suggesting I consider a loom. After considering it for a while, I finally decided to pull the trigger and I'm glad I did. I also bought a guitar cable at the same time. I ordered them on Sunday and got them on Thursday. These cables are amazing. They are really high quality and sturdy. In addition, I did an A/B comparison between the guitar cable I use in my studio and this Rattlesnake cable, and I was completely blown away that I could hear the difference. It's like I was missing multiple frequencies on my old cable. I literally couldn't believe the difference. Regarding their service: I went back and forth with Hank asking questions getting answers. I finally called him on the phone a couple of times to nail down some of the details. He sent me a couple of nice diagrams to confirm what we talked about. After my order I received a personal video recording confirming my order and giving me shipping update. I think the customer service isn't anything short of amazing. I don't leave reviews or testimonials in general, I just don't have the time. But for this one, I had to make the time. These guys rock!
