What does TRS stand for?

TRS is an acronym that stands for Tip, Ring, and Sleeve - which reference the conductors of the plug. With each TRS cable, a 20AWG conductor would be connecting to the tip contact of the plug, a conductor on the ring contact of the plug, and the internal braided copper shield is bound to the plug's shield.

What is a TRS Cable?

A TRS instrument cable is a simple cable containing two internal conductors and a shield. Standard instrument cables use a single conductor and shield. The purpose of this type of cable is to pass a pair of signals instead of a single signal.

For example a TRS cable could be used as a stereo cable passing left and right signals in a single cable – like an auxiliary cable or headphone extension cable. A TRS cable for guitar could be used to pass multiple pickup sources (piezo and magnetic pickup) down a single cable. A TRS audio cable could also be used as an XLR or balanced cable used in many recording interfaces.

Q: Where is your cable manufactured?

We have a variety of wire mills that we work with. All of the wire mills we work with our in the United States. We take extreme pride that our cable is milled in the United States and hand assembled here in Missoula, Montana.

Q: Is a TRS a balanced cable?

Answer

It depends on the signal being passed down the TRS. A balanced signal is a pair of the exact same signal but with one signal inverted (180 degrees out of phase) relative to the other. Where a stereo signal is not equal - one represents the right side of the stereo field, and the other line is the left.

Q: Is a TRS a stereo cable?

Answer

It depends on the signal being passed down the TRS. If it's a stereo signal (left and right like in headphones), then it's basically an unbalanced stereo going down the wires. It would not be a balanced cable in this case but a stereo cable.

Q: Should I use a TRS or Standard Instrument cable?

Answer

Typically, for an instrument cable, you should be using a mono / unbalanced instrument cable, but some instruments have additional lines for different pickups where both pickups are separated but going down a single cable. Some Rickenbacker instruments, acoustic guitars, etc, use this - and in that case, you should use a TRS cable. 99% of the time, you should be using a Standard Instrument cable unless otherwise noted.

Q: What is the weaving made of?

Answer

The weave is a poly-weave, meaning it's a plastic polymer-based weave. We use a variety of brands, but primarily TechFlex. It's designed to be heat and abrasion resistant. It is not a cloth/fabric weave, which tends to fray and stain easily.

There’s a reason there’s 500+ reviews and they have a perfect 5 stars. I can’t say enough nice things about this company and their cables/accessories. I’m a big proponent of “you get what you pay for” and these deliver just that and then some. Never any buzz or signal loss, they look fantastic, they feel fantastic. They’re not cheap, and I’m not rich, so the fact that my studio and gig bag is filled with their cables is testament to why I keep coming back a couple cables at a time. It’s flat out worth it. I’ve gotten quite a few unprompted compliments from fellow musicians who I’ve gigged with, and a few from old men who just recognize a well built cable when they’re out to dinner listening to a cover band. Every order has always came lightning fast, with a thank you written on a pad, packed with care. I recently had USPS miss-deliver (and lose) a package, and Amy was on it to get me a replacement as soon as it was apparent it was lost.

Rattlesnake Cable Company makes absolutely fantastic cables. The price for their cables is a bit high, but you most certainly get what you pay for! I have 4 Rattlesnake cables, two so-called SnakeHead cables and 2 Standard Cables. All Rattlesnake cables have a weave surrounding the normal rubber insulation you would find on any type of cable. This "weave" is a sheathing that protects the cable. This weave not only looks great but is also a wonder to behold in and of itself. It's somehow both virtually rock hard but still flexible - so your can step on your cable, you can roll over it with your desk chair, you can drop something heavy on it - and your cable will be 100% fine! This is also where the difference between a "SnakeHead cable" and a "Standard cable" comes into play. The weave, being as sturdy as it is, isn't something you want rubbing the finish off of your favorite guitar. So the SnakeHead versions have about a 1-1.5' length of un-sheathed cable on one end, so you don't scratch up that beautiful paint job on your guitar. The Standard Cables are fully sheathed with the weave and are meant to be used to run from your pedalboard to your amp or whatever other use you may have for them. Finally, each Rattlesnake cable is hand soldered and made to order. For example my two SnakeHead versions both are 15' long and have gold plated Neutrik plugs on each end (as opposed to bare nickle Neutrik plugs). One has a 90° plug on the "board/amp" end and a straight plug on the instrument end and has a weave color called Sidewinder Red. My other SnakeHead has 90° plugs on both ends and has a weave color called Green Ivy. My two Standard Rattlesnake cables are 10' long with straight Neutrick nickle plugs, and one is white and the other is black. I use these to run from my pedal board to my two amps for a stereo setup. If you want true quality and reliability from your instrument cables (plus a few other types of cables they are now making, along with custom made cable looms) you cannot go wrong with Rattlesnake Cable Company.

Hank and crew at Rattlesnake go out of their way to make sure they support you before, during and after your order. How do I know? Quick story: My new puppy tried to chew a Rattlesnake braided cable, not getting very far, but rendering it useless. Was going to try and splice it due to its value, but instead I sent Hank an email. He not only replaced the cable with a brand new one over a year after I bought it, he even sent doggie chew treats in the box! Are you kidding? Who does this?
